<p>There are multiple ways to get the various types of images Debian is providing.
  The main goal of this site is providing easy to use download links for the 
  images that have users mostly downloaded from Debian. There is a big chance
  you will find here your wanted image directly without further steps.</p>
<p>We provide all kinds of installation images, supporting installation and use
  on many types of system: laptops, desktops and servers.</p>
<p>And we also have created so called live images that you can run Debian on your
  computer directly for testing without having to install it first.</p>

        <p><em><strong>Provided image types - official vs. non official images</strong></em></p>
        <ul class="centered-middle-50-none-list">
          <li>The Debian Developers are required to follow the rules of the
            <a href="$(HOME)/social_contract#guidelines">Debian Free Software
            Guidelines (DFSG)</a>!<br/>
            This mean that all installation images, no matter on the supported
            platform or architecture, need to be made and created only based on
            free software that is based on the ground of the DFSG.</li>
          <li>Unfortunately quite a lot of manufactures of PC hardware (e.g.
            CPUs, NICs or video cards) are requiring the usage of a firmware blobs
            to make the hardware work as expected.</li>
          <li>Given such firmware files are pre-compiled binaries with no official
            accessible source code makes them closed source (by the DFSG).
            This also means that such files <strong>can't</strong> be part of any
            official Debian installation image and are excluded.</li>
          <li>The Debian developers are aware that all official installation
            images can cause problems while the installation process or will
            mostly create an not fully working Debian installation if no further
            steps and precautions are made.</li>
          <li>Because of this circumstance there are also images provided which
            does include such required firmware files for getting fully functional
            hardware. They are all have an additional suffix <em><strong>non-free</em></strong>
            as they include non-free parts from a view of the DFSG. Because such
            images violating the DFSG they can't be an official Debian image and
            the Debian project is marking them as <strong>non official</strong>
            images.</li>
          <li>Even if the images marked as non official you are not alone if you
            want or need to use them! The Debian support channels will provide help
            to you if required.</li>
          <li>New users to Debian should choose such an non-free image for better
            first timer user experience!</li>

            If any of the hardware in your system <strong>requires</strong> non-free
            firmware to be loaded with the device driver, you probably want to use
            one of the <strong>unofficial</strong> images including these
            <strong>non-free</strong> firmwares.</p>

        <p><em><strong>Supported architectures and platforms</strong></em></p>
        <ul class="centered-middle-50-none-list">
          <li>Debian can be used on various platforms that are based on different
            CPU architectures and we build images for almost all of them. The probably
            most used platform in Debian today is named
            <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64">amd64</a> (started in
            2000) and even hardware that was bought not recently will be build up
            by this platform. So even if your are unsure about your local
            machine you mostly can simply grab an image build for this platform.</li>
          <li>Another platform that might be interesting for you is called in Debian
            i386. The importance of this platform has decreased rapidly over the
            past years, some other distributions have dropped the support already.
            In case you are required to use an image for that platform please use
            one of the buttons for more downloads further down.</li>
          <li>Each release of Debian is supporting a lot of various other hardware
            architectures than the Intel based. For the current Debian <current_release_name>
            release there are also images available for a list of the architectures
            that Debian is calling than Release Critical platforms. The release
            team is deciding which platform will be part of this list for a stable
            release. A platform which is called release critical will get security
            support for the whole live span of a release!</li>
          <li>
            Debian is providing images not only for the release critical platforms,
            all platforms are called <a href="$(HOME)/ports/">ports</a> within the
            Debian universe.</li>
        </ul>

          <p><em><strong>Summary:</strong></em><br/>
            If you need a image that is for another platform than
            <strong>amd64</strong> please use one of the buttons for more images.
